Next Gen Consoles 2013 Edition
I’m wondering what the group thinks of the next gen consoles? I’ve had a Wii for…I dunno 6 or 7 years now; haven’t played it more than a few times in the last year. I liked it, but in the end the games were not engrossing enough to get me to wade through the 3-5 min (approx) of boot-up and browsing time. The Zelda game and Mario Galaxy were great, and of course I played the shit out of MarioKart. Not to mention the annoyance of having to get out a disc. I used to play a lot of 1st person shooters on the PC, and I revere Half-Life on Steam. Portal 2 and Limbo (and before that Team Fortress 2) were probably the last two games I got really into. Of course most of my gaming time is done on the subway on an iPhone, or at the couch with an iPad (angry birds, edge, temple run, tiny thief, infinity blade, just to name a few). I really want to start playing FPSs again, and GTA V looks fun as all hell.
With the new consoles coming out soon and the announcement of the steam OS for the living room, I’m curious what you guys’ thoughts are on this topic. PS4 or XBOX1? excited about steamOS from Valve? [UPDATE, steamBOX/Piston] A good read here about that. Will a new apple TV act as a trojan horse for gaming (I think yes, but I doubt you’ll see any top tier launch games being ported…) Wii U?
Personally I’m thinking I will get a PS4. XBOX seems to have fucked up royally their launch and a bunch of the stuff they were talking about just didn’t do it for me. Plus having to have a (paid) live membership to be able to watch netflix, just seems like a dick move. Also they wanted to kill the used game market with some DRM and you have to be always online (They’ve since reversed both).

I gotta admit, I’m not even up on the Xbox 1 vs PS4 debate but just based on what little I’ve read about the DRM and charging twice for things like Netflix I’m staying loyal to PS4. They’ve never disappointed in the interface or in the performance dept.
So aside from the differing subscription models, both seem pretty similar on the tech specs. Which means it would come down to the games. Barring some exclusies like Halo, I feel like Sony historically had the win with variety of top games. That’s where my money is.
Now GTA 5? Not gonna lie, I waited long as I could but I broke this weekend and picked it up….and its dope. The action starts right up! The graphics are smoother, they brought back bicycles, and added jetskis! The new swapping between players adds a cool new dimension too. The map is vast and still pretty new but I’ve already managed to motorbike off some incredible heights to my near death… oof, I haven’t slept all weekend.
