A new animated renaissance?
Recently it clicked in my head the huge number of animated shows I am currently a fan of. I’ve always loved cartoons and the freedoms it gave you to explore what would otherwise be absurd (or impossible) to show in a live action setting. But these days there seems to be a plethora of great animated programs. So here i am touting some of the best in my humble opinion. Anything else I should be watching?
Bob’s Burgers
Archer
Adventure Time
Gravity Falls
Tron: Uprising (Rest In Peace)

of course South Park as well. I stopped watching the Simpsons cause it seems so labored now and (ironically) outlandish. They should just retire that shit already and do a movie every couple years, or a few hour long holiday specials or something. I also freakin loved Futurama for all its nerdy scifi comedy send ups. I’m glad they had a couple chances to come back and make new episodes.
Which brings me to Rick & Morty, my new favorite. The elevator pitch is: what if Doc Brown was Marty McFly’s grandfather and also more crazy, less moral/ethical and an alcoholic. He drags his grandson on crazy adventures through space/time but keep grounded through their simple family. I highly recommend checking out the pilot and the other 5 episodes which have aired so far. i was sick this weekend and i burned through them all one after another. What i really love is the rules they’ve setup for this world they’ve created, ripe with possibilities of where to take the show. And the writing is damn near perfect, great setups punchlines and one liners. and so so twisted.
I just watched the “Rixty Minutes” episode. goddamned genious.
UPDATE: I discovered Tron: Uprising on Netflix this weekend! Visually there’s alot to like. The limited but vibrant palette and the forced perspective on the characters add a nice graphic novel aesthetic.
Still pretty early to judge overall story but so far the Pilot was enough to pique my interest.
I didn’t realize they cancelled Tron. I was kinda hype off Motor City but they cancelled that too.
This Rick and Morty looks funny. I like Dan Harmon so I expect alot of irreverent, silliness.
